Artist Bio: Rachel was born in Sydney and spent her childhood travelling to a range of Australian country towns. After graduating from a degree in Illustration at the Queensland College of Art, Rachel has been working as a secondary art educator in high schools in Queensland for over a decade, helping to inspire others in their creative journey. She had her first solo show at Dbar Gallery and has been involved in numerous group shows on the Gold Coast.
Rachels paintings and drawings possess a very illustrative and graphic quality. Her forms are distorted and morphed, yet, there is a real word accuracy within them. Her colours are soft, calming and playful. The confident and rich line work in her paintings lure and guide the viewers eye.
The characters in her work tell a child-like, yet deeply, contemplative story. Each character that she invents seems to come from a unique world. The viewers imagination is teased and invited to complete the story.
Artist Statement: “Inspired by childrens book illustrations, I am drawn to the storytelling of fictional characters. The period of childhood is of utmost importance to the solitary figures I represent in my paintings. Fairytales and childrens classics, combined with my own experiences as a child, form a backdrop for which I revisit and use as inspiration in my own work. I often create characters which are silent and contemplative, set in empty spaces, reflecting on their presence in that environment. “
